The Bhagavad Gita is a manual for life. It contains the Vedanta philosophy, which enunciates the technique of life and living.

The Gita is the philosophical kernel of the great epic Mahabharata by the sage Veda Vyasa. The epic speaks of the rivalry between two royal families of cousins. The Pandavas, who were moral and virtuous and the Kauravas, who were immoral and vicious.

Prince Arjuna was an outstanding warrior and commander of the Pandava army. On the battlefront of Kuruksetra he saw his respected elders, loving friends and relatives in both armies.  He was overwhelmed by emotions and was incapacitated to think and act. The profound knowledge of Gita imparted by Krsna lifted Arjuna out of his emotional stupor. He was rehabilitated with a new vision and energy. He fulfilled his role as a leader of his forces, fought the war and emerged victorious.

Present day humans, in spite of their academic and professional training, find themselves in the same situation, succumbing to emotional pressure and not able to handle the challenges in life. The knowledge of the Gita retains its relevance in the present as well. It helps humans to identify their obligations in life and fulfil them to perfection. The ultimate obligation is to realise one’s true identity, the eternal Self within.

Sunandaji, daughter – disciple of Swami Parthasarathy conducts the discourses on Bhagavad Gita in Colombo annually. The event is sponsored by Kanapathy Chetty Selvanathan Charitable Trust.
